The Registration Process

For registration at any grade level you will need to contact your catchment school.  You will be required to complete a standard registration package for each child. These forms are available at your school, or you can download a copy of the registration package here. Please note: There may be other forms to fill in at the school.

In addition to completing this form, you are asked to provide the following:

  • Original proof of child’s age (birth certificate or passport)
  • Medical care card (to confirm number)
  • Proof of residence

Any students without Canadian documents and/or proof of BC residency will be redirected to the Principal of International Education at Cowichan Secondary School.

Cross Boundary Request:

You may wish to complete a cross boundary transfer request to attend a school, which is not in your catchment area. The annual deadline for the following school year is May 30th. Completing a cross boundary transfer request does not guarantee it will be approved. If you complete a cross boundary transfer request form.  Parents are advised to register at their neighbourhood school, to secure a seat, while waiting for out of area applications to be considered. This process takes somewhat longer as the school will not confirm placement of “out of area” students until they are certain that the needs of those residing in catchment have been met. Current information about the cross boundary transfer process, as per District Policy #3309, is located on our website at www.sd79.bc.ca.

What Happens If Space Is Not Available?

While every effort is made to place children who wish to attend their catchment school at that school, occasionally it becomes necessary to explore alternate placement when class sizes reach their maximum, or the new registration happens after September 30, once staffing has been completed. Please be assured that all other options are thoroughly explored before making such a decision. Should displacement occur, the child would be offered an alternate placement at the next closest location that has space. The child would then be placed on a waitlist and given the opportunity to return to the catchment school as soon as space becomes available. When space does becomes available, it would be the family’s choice as to whether the child returns to their catchment school, or remains in the alternate placement for the duration of the year or longer.
