    Brief History

AB Greenwell Elementary School originally located in Lake Cowichan was opened in1969 and named after a local pioneer, -Archie--Greenwell. It was designed as and followed an “open area” school philosophy and for many years students were taught in this unique environment. In the early ‘90’s the school underwent a renovation and the open area design was modified to include partial walls. Sadly, in February of 2007, the school was closed and the students and staff were moved into the Yount school location, which had been previously been closed in June 2006. Yount School is located in Youbou and is a 15 minute bus ride from the Lake Cowichan site. The move was a challenge for students, their families and for staff but through teamwork and perseverance the school has remained a vibrant, relevant and up to date school. A B Greenwell School has embraced the Yount location and is continuing to embrace their own uniqueness. A.B.Greenwell School has proven themselves to be a resilient learning community.

    What makes our school special:

AB Greenwell is a small school with a warm, welcoming, family feel to it. The student population is small. There are four classes. Kindergarten to grade five. As a result of the move to Youbou most of the students are bused from Lake Cowichan. Although the students, their families and the staff miss the old AB Greenwell site, they have embraced the Yount location and are taking advantage of the many unique qualities it provides. The building in Youbou is located on a beautiful schoolyard with lake views. There is a modern playground, a play area with woods, a large playing field and a garden area. Wildlife, including birds, elk, deer, bear, and cougars have visited the school yard. This offers a perfect setting for environmental studies, animal safety lessons and many types of outdoor education. There is lake access and mountain hiking trails at our doorstep. The Youbou community hall is next door to the school. The hall is home to the oldest bowling alley in Canada and a large gym and stage. A.B. Greenwell has access to these facilities. Students are able to go bowling on a regular basis as part of their Physical Education Program. The Yount building itself, is well built, in good condition and is designed well. It ‘s upstairs houses the classrooms, library and office. Downstairs is the gym, Kindergarten room, art room and community room. The layout of the school allows staff and parents to plan many whole school activities and special events. Whole school writing days, Earth Day learning stations, Fun Fairs, Hot Lunches and Pancake Breakfasts are just a few examples of the learning experiences and special events taking place at A.B.Greenwell. Students are also offered extra curricular activities during their lunch hour. They can choose from School Sports teams, Chess Club, Garden Club and Intramural sports for School House Teams. A.B.Greemwell is privileged to have a caring, hard working P.A.C. and Staff and a welcoming community supporting its’ students. It’s a good place to learn, a good place to play and a good place to be. Come see for yourself!
