Student Support Services

Learning Assistance

Children are referred to the learning assistance program, via a school based team meeting, by their classroom teachers if they are experiencing difficulty. Parents will be notified in the event their child is need of this program. Progress reports are given to parents along with their regular report cards. As part of the registration process, parents are asked to sign a form which gives our learning assistance team permission to assess their child's academic progress.

School Based Team

Students who are experiencing difficulties academically, socially, and or emotionally, may be referred to our School Based Team (SBT). This team includes the Principal, Learning Assistance teacher, Resource teacher, Counsellor, Speech Pathologist and either Primary or Intermediate Teachers. The SBT will discuss the problem and make recommendations as to how to best support both the student and teacher.

Individual Educational Plans

Students who are experiencing difficulties often get put on Individual Educational Plans (IEP) to support their learning. Parents are invited to participate in the development of their child’s IEP. IEP’s are updated at each reporting period and parents are informed of progress.

Integrated Support

For students who have been identified by the District resource team as having special learning needs, they may benefit from additional support services. Services may include additional resource materials for the individual as well as assistance from district support personnel and or the school’s Resource/Learning Assistance teacher. Identified students will have an Individual Educational Plan (IEP) on file that is updated yearly with input from all personnel involved. Parents are a necessary partner in these meetings.

Counseling Services

A school district counselor, is assigned to the school for 1 & 1/2 days per week. Individual and family counseling is available by referral.

Speech Therapy

A school district Speech Pathologist is assigned to our school for 1 & 1/2 days per week. Individual therapy and consultation is available by referral.

Assessment Referrals by the Learning Services Team

After the school based learning services team meets, students may be referred to have further assessments beyond that done by by teachers in the school:

The district psychologist provides psycho-educational testing of students whose assessment requirements go beyond that provided at the school by the Learning Assistance teacher.

The school counselor provides social and behavioural assessment tools completed by students, parents or teachers to help support the behavioural and social emotional needs of students.

Students may have vision, speech and hearing needs that require further assessments completed by the District Speech Language Pathologist or Teacher of the Visually or Hearing impaired.

Students may have fine and gross motor needs that require consultation from the District Occupational Therapist.

English as a Second Language / Dialect (ESL / ESD)

A school district teacher is assigned to our school for 2 & 1/2 days per week to support our student whose first language is not English. Individual and group support is available by referral to the school based team.
