I Like To Learn (map skills)
This is a great interactive site for learning the names of countries and capital cities (including Canada), oceans, seas, lakes, rivers, etc. Best for Intermediate students.

Test Your Geography Knowledge
A great collection of interactive maps. This site is similar to the I Like to Learn site (above).

Google Earth
This site has a free download of a virtual world composed of aerial photographs and computer generated maps. You can fly around the planet and zoom in on your favourite countries, cities, beaches, cultrual landmarks, or, in some communities on Vancouver Island, your own rooftop.

British Columbia Archives
This site uses content from the B.C. Archives collection to support the Ministry of Education's prescribed learning outcomes for Social Studies. Click on the links on the left of the page for resources to support your child's grade level.

Canada's Digital Collections
One of the largest sources of Canadian content on the Internet. More than 600 collections are available, celebrating Canada's history, geography, science, technology and culture. This site was not created for Elementary students, but it's an excellent source of information for homeschool parents wanting to learn more about the Canadian geography and history topics their children are studying.

This is an excellent history site, especially for Grade 7 Social Studies (Ancient Civilizations). You can print reading materials and worksheets that have been written at a Grade 6-8 level.

Lesson plans and links to lots of sites for country and ancient civilizations reports for Intermediate students.

The World Fact Book
Background data for every country in the world. Includes a section on flags of the world. This site is maintained by the CIA, and is most appropriate for upper Intermediate grades and spies.

MSN Encarta
An excellent interactive World atlas. Zoom in or out to change map scales and details.

Proud Canadian Kids
A Canadian site for students from Grade 2 to Grade 8. Topics include government, famous Canadians, artists, authors, musicians, maps, emblems, wildlife . . . .

Canada's Government Webquest
Your job is to explore and investigate Canada's levels of government, identify current political leaders, and broaden your understanding of life in a democratic society. You must come up with some interesting and attractive methods of demonstrating your understanding of Canada and the Government.
(This webquest is designed as a group project, but can be easily modified for individual students).

Canadian Social Studies Resources on Access.ca:
Use "Find Resources" to search through the collections of The Canadian Encyclopedia and Youth Encyclopedia, Historica, Library and Archives Canada, and the McCord Museum. You can customize your search, browsing through broad categories or focusing on a particular topic, time period, reading level, or grade level.

Canada Info
Canada Info is more than 400 pages of information about Canada - its government, history, facts, people, security, geography, provinces, symbols, and more. Browse through statistics, maps, and photographs and then choose from dozens of fact sheets to download to your computer. Great information for Intermediate and Secondary students.

Canadian Parliament
A Federal government site about Canadian Parliament, the role of MP's, and how laws are made. For upper Intermediate and Secondary students.

Energy Literacy Series
A Canadian site that examines renewable and nonrenewable energy sources. It provides information about energy, where facilities are located, and how energy resources are obtained, converted, and used. It examines energy issues from different perspectives. Intended for upper Intermediate or Secondary students.

Western Wildlife Federation -- Schools For a Living Planet
Provides free access to curriculum-linked, printable activities for grades 3 to 8. Curriculum connects English, Social Studies and Science, and meets British Columbia Learning Outcomes. (You must register to access materials. Homeschoolers can register using Chemainus Elementary as their school). Open this link for a description of the resources.

United Nations Climate Change Conference
For upper Intermediate and Secondary students. This site is following events at the Dec. 7 to 18 Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen. It has numerous links to current information about climate change.

WatchKnow
Videos for kids to learn from. An excellent way to learn about countries. All video clips include an age rating.

National Geographic Kids
