Alex Aitken Elementary
was named in honour of ALEXANDER CHALMERS AITKEN (1864-1923).
Alex Aitken was a
Scottish shepherd who came to the West Coast in the 1890’s.
For some years he was employed by Sir Anthony Musgrave, a pioneer,
Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia. The Musgrave Family
established their summer home in the Cowichan Valley near the
site of this school. Alex Aitken purchased and later farmed much
of the Musgrave property in the Valley.
When Mr. Aitken left
Scotland he brought with him numerous relatives. These relations
grew in numbers and even today there are many descendants living
on Southern Vancouver Island.
On May 29th, 1968
Alex Aitken Elementary was officially opened by the then Minister
of Education, the Honourable Leslie Peterson.
The school’s
small beginning has now been through two renovations. We now
have 10 classrooms, a fully equipped computer lab, a large spacious
library, a neighbourhood center, a resource and learning assistant
room, and a multipurpose room.
Most of the children
attending Alex Aitken Elementary are within walking distance
to the school. We have many parents who volunteer to work at
the school. It is quite common to find parents walking through
and working in various classrooms at any given time.
