1.  STUDENT SAFETY

1.1 EMERGENCY EVACUATION & FIRE ALARMS

In the event of a fire or other emergency, an alarm will sound.  Students are expected to follow the instructions of their teachers and move quickly to the assembly area.  It is important to maintain order and quiet so that instructions can be clearly heard and attendance may be taken effectively.

As the fire alarm system is connected to the Mill Bay Fire Department, volunteer firemen must leave their jobs and respond if the alarm is set off.  IT IS A SERIOUS OFFENCE TO DELIBERATELY CAUSE A FALSE FIRE ALARM.

1.2  EARTHQUAKE PROCEDURE

When you feel an earth tremor:

  • Take cover under or beside a desk or table and face away from windows;
  • Assume the crash position on your knees, head down, with one hand clasping your neck or head and the other holding onto the furniture;
  • Count to 60; earthquakes rarely last longer than 60 seconds; and
  • Follow your teacher out of the school to the assembly area.

1.3  VISITORS

All visitors must report immediately to the office and state the purpose of the visit.  Approved visitors will be required to wear a visitor’s identification tag.

2.  STUDENT SERVICES

2.1  COUNSELLING

There are two counsellors, Mrs. Chabot and Mrs. Butler, available to help you with any problem you may have.  Here are few examples of the way they may be able to help you:

  • Arranging for assistance if you are finding your schoolworkdifficult;
  • Listening to your personal or social problems and providing strategies to help solve them;
  • Developing your work habits and study skills;
  • Mediating conflicts that arise between you and other students of the school.

If you want to talk to a counsellor, please drop by the counselling area and arrange an appointment.  Counsellors are not involved in disciplining students, and all information shared with them is kept confidential.

2.2  STUDENT DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

Student Development Centre is generally for students who have a special education designation, or students may be assigned after consultation with the student’s teachers, parents and principal or vice-principal.

2.3  LEARNING ASSISTANCE

Learning Assistance is available either on a short-term basis or long-term basis when it is felt that the student would benefit from either small group or individual assistance.

2.4  STUDENT SUPPORT ROOM

Student Support Room is for short-term intervention when there are minor concerns.  This may be due to either disruptive behaviour or inability to concentrate on the task at hand in the classroom.  Students may also be sent to the Student Support Room for positive reasons, such as to write tests, catch up on assignments, or when an alternate work environment is needed.

2.5  HOSPITAL HOMEBOUND HELP

If you are absent for an extended period of time due to illness or injury, arrangements may be made for the District-based Hospital-Homebound teacher to provide individualized instruction and supervision in your home or hospital room.  This can be arranged by contacting the counsellor or the vice-principal.

2.6 FOOD SERVICES

The school provides the following services (subject to change from year to year):

  • Wraps and quesadillas day is Tuesday - funds raised from this go to support our PE program;
  • Pizza day is Thursday - funds raised support the yearbook production and the lunch program for needy students;
  • Please use the recycling containers provided to return your cans and bottles.  You are responsible for picking up your litter and depositing it in a garbage container.

As of September 2008, all schools are required to comply with the Ministry of Education’s Guidelines for Food and Beverage Sales, which align with Canada’s Food Guide and distinguish food and beverage options into four categories:

  • Choose Most (at least 50% of food sold must be from this category):  including whole grain breads and fresh vegetables, tend to be the highest in nutrients, the lowest in unhealthy components, and the least processed;
  • Choose Sometimes (a maximum of 50% is from this category): including such things as fruit canned in light syrup, represent choices that are moderately salted, sweetened or processed;
  • Choose Least:  including such things as fries, tend to be low in key nutrients such as iron and calcium and are highly salted, sweetened or processed (WILL NOT BE SOLD IN SCHOOL); and
  •  Not Recommended:  including candies and drinks where sugar is the first or the second ingredient after water, tend to be highly processed, or have very high amounts of sweeteners, salt, fat, trans fat or calories relative to their nutritional value (WILL NOT BE SOLD IN SCHOOL).

2.7  LOCKS AND LOCKERS

Lockers are assigned to students to use during the school year on the following conditions:

  • Students are responsible for the locker that is assigned to them.  There is no switching of locks or lockers.
  • Only school locks may be used on student lockers.  The combination of the lock must be registered at the office.  Lock and locker problems are to be referred to the vice-principal.
  • The locker may only be used for the storage of books, school supplies and equipment, outerwear, PE clothes and lunches.
  • Students are responsible for cleaning and removing all material from their lockers at the end of the year or when they leave the school.
  • School officials may search student lockers at any time and without prior notice in order to ensure compliance with the conditions of use and other school policies and rules.
  • If you lose your lock, you must purchase a replacement at the office for $5.
  • It is absolutely essential that you keep your lock combination confidential.  Do not tell anyone, not even your best friend.  If you forget your combination, the office staff will remind you of it.

2.8 BICYCLE SECURITY

Those who ride bicycles to school should keep them at the designated spot.  Since missing bicycles are not the responsibility of the school, you are advised not to ride expensive bicycles to school.

2.9  MEDICAL ROOM

The medical room serves as a temporary facility for students who become ill during the school day.  Students MUST report to the office and can only be admitted to the medical room with the approval of the principal or vice-principal.  The reasonfor this is so that a student in the medical room will be checked on periodically.  Students must also sign out of the medical room by notifying the office staff.

The school has First Aid personnel on staff to deal with medical emergencies.  Students will not be sent home unless a parent or responsible person is notified and appropriate transportation or other arrangements have been made.

The medical room is located in the Main Office.  The school can provide no medication unless forms have been filed with the principal.

Accidents and emergencies should be referred to a teacher immediately.  If you wish to go home because of an accident or illness, you must check out at the office.

2.10 STUDENT PHOTOS

All students must have a photo taken for use in school records, the yearbook, and student cards.  There is no charge for this service.  However, if you wish to purchase a photo package, you must do so by the fee set by the photographer.  There is a second opportunity for those students who are absent at the time of the photographer’s first visit.

2.11 STUDENT FEES

At the beginning of the year a student activity fee is charged ($20).  The student fee is used for awards ($2), activities and performances ($14), clubs and games ($1), intramurals ($1) and Team Track Meet ($2).

2.12  TEXTBOOKS

There is no rental charge for textbooks.  Your teacher will issue books so that each student will receive the books needed for a particular subject the first time he/she visits the class.  All books should have the student’s name, teacher’s name and homeroom in the front cover.  Students who lose or damage books will be charged accordingly.

2.13 LOST AND FOUND

Lost and found items are kept in the Lost & Found area located outside the entrance to the Multi-Purpose Room.  Clothing and personal belongings identified with your name can be returned to you more quickly.

2.14 STUDENT VALUABLES

You are responsible for the care and safety of your personal belongings.  You are advised not to bring large sums of money or valuable items to school.  Do not leave purses, money or any other valuables in the change rooms.  Leave any valuables with your teacher or the office.  It is very difficult to find stolen items.

2.15 BUS INFORMATION

The bus driver is in complete charge of the bus.  Students must abide by School Board regulations in order to retain their bus riding privileges.  Gross or repeated violations of school and/or bus regulations may result in suspension from the bus service for a set amount of time.  Information regarding bus routes and times is available by phoning the bus garage at 748-1066.
