4.CODE OF CONDUCT

4.1  SCHOOL DISTRICT EXPECTATIONS

The Board believes that appropriate student conduct based on respect for oneself, respect for others and respect for property is essential for the development of responsible citizens. In order to help create a safe, caring and orderly school environment that fosters respect, inclusion, fairness and equity, the board requires students to:

  • Respect the learning environment of others
  • Be aware of and obey all school behaviour expectations
  • Attend school regularly and punctually
  • Respect the rights and property of all persons within the school including peers, staff and parents
  • Respect the diversity of the school community
  • Not discriminate through publication, service, accommodation, and facility in the school environment
  • Behave in a safe and responsible manner at all times
  • Not threaten, harass, intimidate, assault, or be aggressive, or retaliate against a person who has reported an incident, and
  • Not be in possession of or use or distribute weapons or illegal or restricted substances.

Note:  This is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of unacceptable behaviours.

4.2  SCHOOL CODE OF CONDUCT

Purpose:George Bonner Middle School Code of Conduct is intended to encourage appropriate student behaviour and to provide an atmosphere where all individuals feel a sense of respect, safety and belonging.  All students must abide by the expectations outlined in the Code of Conduct while on the school premises, going to and returning from school, and at all school games, functions and field trips whenever and wherever held.

Code of Conduct

Safety

Are my actions safe for myself and for others?

Respect

Do my actions show respect for myself and for others?

Honesty

Do my words and actions represent the truth?

Responsibility

Do my actions meet the expectations to take care of myself and be a dependable member of the school and community?

Courtesy

Do my actions help make this a pleasant place, where people feel welcome and accepted and where they can work without disruption?

4.3 SCHOOL-WIDE DISCIPLINE POLICY

Philosophy:

George Bonner is committed to developing the adolescent through a safe, structured, caring and cooperative environment.  It operates on the belief that all students have the right to learn.  To do so means that each student works toward creating an environment that is positive and productive.  No student has the right to choose behaviour that infringes upon the rights of others.

As a staff we believe that home and school must share the responsibility for teaching children (young adults) appropriate behaviour.  By working together we can increase the probability that students will learn responsibility and respect for others, thereby increasing their self-respect.

George Bonner Middle School has adopted a school-wide discipline process, which we believe reflects the above philosophy.  Most students behave responsibly most of the time.  Some students, however, may err in their judgement of what is acceptable behaviour.  The school-wide discipline policy is designed to help students understand that they have made a mistake and that they have chosen to behave inappropriately and to encourage them to acquire andapply more acceptable alternatives.

Classroom Expectations:

Each teacher has developed expectations that will contribute to a positive learning environment.  These expectations will be communicated to and discussed with the students in the first weeks of operation of the school.

Consequences:

Teachers at George Bonner Middle School will continue to ensure that positive behaviour is given recognition.  The staff is committed to increasing communication not only between teachers and students, but also between school and home.  This may come in the form of encouraging telephone calls, sending positive notes home, and enacting positive parent-teacher conferences.

Students will also know when they have chosen behaviour that is unacceptable.  Our goals are to help students see that they are responsible for their behaviour and that they are in control of themselves.  The choice is always with the student. All reasonable steps will be taken to prevent retaliation against a student who has made a complaint of a breach of the code of conduct.

Minor Offenses:

Staff members will handle minor offenses “on the spot.”  Teachers will ensure that students understand what is expected of them and if minor offenses persist, students may be referred to the Student Support Room.

Major Offenses:

Major offenses are those behaviours that threaten the orderly function of the school or are threatening to the well being of others.  These usually include:  open defiance of authority, discrimination, physical or mental abuse of others and continuous, disruptive behaviour.

Major offenses will be handled by a formal process.  Open communication will be maintained by the teacher with school administration, the parents and the student. A plan of action will be decided upon, discussed and implemented.  The consequences for major offenses will be decided for each individual case with a focus of restitution.  For example, the consequences for an act of vandalism may be:  restoring the article vandalized, paying for the article, or, if serious enough, involving the police.

Continuous major misbehaviour will result in a progression of consequences that may include:  in-school suspension, at-home suspension, transfer to another school, assistance through out-of-school agencies, or expulsion. Special considerations may be applied to students who are unable to comply with expectations.

It must be stated that only a small segment of a school population ever reaches this level of misbehaviour.  In keeping with our school philosophy, the students will continue to receive all the positive support possible to help them stay in school.

Suspension Protocol:

  • A student may only be suspended by the principal or designate.
  • When a student is suspended both for an in school and out of school suspension, teacher(s) will provide the student with work for the duration of the suspension.  The work will be listed on the Suspension Notification form.
  • Once a suspension is completed, the student will not be admitted until a meeting with the principal or designate.
  • If the work listed on the Suspension Notification is completed, it will be given to the student’s teacher(s) and the student is eligible to return to class.
  • If the work listed on the Suspension Notification is not completed, the suspension will continue either at home or at the school until the work is completed.
  • Some students may require modification to the work requirement upon return.  (For example, it is not in the student’s best interest to continue to miss more class time.)

4.4  CLOSED CAMPUS

George Bonner Middle School is a “closed campus”.  This means students stay on grounds at all times including lunch and after school while waiting for their bus.  If a student goes off grounds, parents will be contacted and he/she will be assigned to 5 days of Lunch Bunch.  Second time off grounds will result in a suspension to home.

4.5  ALCOHOL AND ILLEGAL DRUGS

Students who possess, consume, or who are under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs while they are under the jurisdiction of the school will be suspended immediately in accordance with School District Policy.

4.6 DRESS CODE

Dress Code Policy was developed by students, parents and staff and adopted in March 2003 and reviewed at a PAC meeting in June 2006.  As a general guideline, the clothing worn while at school should cover the body appropriately.

DRESS CODE

Head

  • No hats, toques or outdoor headgear

Upper Body

  • No halter tops
  • No spaghetti straps or one-shoulder tops
  • Tops to fall below the belly button
  • No low cut necklines

Lower Body

  • The top of pants, shorts or skirts is required to touch the top of the hip bone or higher
  • Skirts or shorts are required to measure two full hand spans from the top of the hipbone

Other

  • No visible underwear
  • Clothing and/or jewelry shall not convey messages that are:  crude, vulgar/profane, gang related, sexually suggestive, or promoting alcohol, drugs, or tobacco

4.7  TOBACCO

George Bonner Middle School is a non-smoking area (everyone).  Students are not to smoke in the building, on the grounds, or within sight of the building.  Offenders will be suspended to home.

4.8 FIGHTING AND INTIMIDATION

All students have a right to attend school, free of the threat of physical or mental abuse.  Those students involved in fights or intimidation or inciting others to fight while they are under the jurisdiction of the school will be suspended.  Their parents or guardians will be notified immediately.

4.9 LATES

Students who are late to class may disrupt and consume the time of fellow classmates, teachers and the office staff.  Frequent lates may result in detentions at noon.  Students who arrive late must report to the office to have their agendas stamped before entering class.  The subject teacher will deal with students who are late to classes.  Frequent lates may result in a student not being allowed into class

4.10 VANDALISM

Students who deliberately damage, deface or otherwise destroy school property will be suspended.  They or their parents will be expected to pay for the damage.  It is important to remember that the school building belongs to the community and that we must do our part to ensure it is kept in good condition for future students.

4.11 CELL PHONES / LISTENING DEVICES

The use of cell phones and other recording devices is challenging the ability of staff to monitor and guide students in their use.  Digital cameras, cell phones and video cameras are adding a new dimension to the problem as photos and videos can be recorded without permission and distributed within minutes.  Therefore, recording and transmitting devices, such as cell phones, cameras, etc. are not permitted to be used during the school day and are to be kept in the locker.  Listening devices are not permitted during class time.  Staff process for handling confiscated devices is:

  • Bring confiscated device to the office;
  • Place device in envelope with student name, teacher name, and date of confiscation;
  • Principal/Vice-principal or clerical staff to record student name on log book, documenting student name and date of confiscation;
  • Student may retrieve device at end of day from the office;
  • Upon second confiscation, only parent/guardian can retrieve the device with the provision that it does not come to school again.  (Students have access to phones in all classrooms and at the office.)

4.12 RCMP LIAISON

The Shawnigan Lake detachment of the RCMP provides a school liaison officer.  It is the duty of the liaison officer to attend any complaint at the school.  Additionally, this police officer will come to the school as time permits to develop a positive relationship with Bonner students.

4.13 ATTENDANCE

Regular attendance is a major factor contributing to student success.

Attendance is taken in all classes.  If you arrive late to school, check in to the office with your Agenda.  Your Agenda will be stamped with the time of arrival.

Leaving early?  Bring a note from home.  The note can be written in the Agenda.  Show it to your classroom teacher and check out at the office.

Absent?  Have your parents phone the school the morning of the day of your absence.

Extended absences for medical or family matters?  Phone the school counsellors.  We do have a hospital-homebound teacher in the district that will help during these times.

Snow days? Listen to the local radio station 89.7 SUN FM to see if the buses are running.  More information will be in the newsletters.

Withdrawing or transferring? Report to your homeroom teacher or to one of the counsellors.

Absent from a Class/Fieldtrip? Signed permission from your teacher(s) is needed prior to the activity.  Missed work must be caught up!

Truant? Truancy is an unexplained absence from class without prior knowledge of the teacher or the parent.  Truancies can result in an in-school suspension and a re-admission conference with the parent or guardian.  Minimum penalty for missing a class the first time will be 3 days of Lunch Bunch.
