5.SCHOOL FACILITIES

5.1 LITTER / RECYCLING

Our custodial staff works very hard to maintain a clean and tidy school.  Students can help by using designated waste containers and recycling bins.  Please do your part to show respect and pride in your school by keeping it clean.

5.2 GENERAL OFFICE

The general office is open from 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.  The offices of the principal and vice-principal are located in this area.

5.3 LIBRARY

The Library Resource Centre is located to your left as you enter the main lobby.  A computer lab adjoins the library and offers internet access, word processing programs and other applications for classes and individuals.  A fully automated catalogue is available on-line for quick and easy searching of the library collection.

You are reminded that the Library is a place for working quietly on yourschoolwork, reading or doing research.  Students who are there to ‘socialize’ will be asked to leave.  All students are expected to have their teacher’s permission to use the library or the computer lab during class time.  Loans of print resources are for two weeks and up to three items may be borrowed at a time.

5.4 COMPUTER LABS

George Bonner is fortunate to have 2 computer labs.  Each lab has an acceptable use policy and it is the student’s responsibility to know and follow the policy in the labs.  Installing personal software on school computers is forbidden.

5.5 GYM

In addition to being a classroom for PE classes, the gym is also available for supervised activities outside the regular classroom hours.  Students are encouraged to take care of the facility by adhering to the following:  food and drinks are not permitted in the gym or the change rooms and approved footwear must be worn at all times.  Please help to keep the facility clean.

5.6  MULTI PURPOSE ROOM

The multi-purpose room provides a facility for a variety of functions.  The primary focus is to serve as a second area for PE classes and for school-based performance events and assemblies.

5.7 TELEPHONE

Students are not to use the telephones in classrooms or the counselling area unless during an emergency.  If you have a reason to use a phone while at school, please come to the office and ask permission from the secretary to use the school phone.

6.  SCHOOL ORGANIZATION

6.1  TEAMING

George Bonner Middle School is organized into teaching teams.  Each team is a school within a school.  There are many benefits of teaming but the main one being that teaming encourages development of positive relationships.

6.2 FLEXIBLE BLOCK SCHEDULE

The timetable used at Bonner is a Flexible BlockSchedule that allows teachers a great deal of control over how the day is organized.  Teachers are able to make the classes as short or as long as necessary to create the best learning conditions.  Another benefit of teaming is that a team can organize a field trip without disrupting other classes.  The block rotation will be A, B, C, D, E, F and G.  However, the blocks may be rotated mid-way through the year.

6.3 PHYSICAL EDUCATION

We are proud to offer daily physical education classes because we believe in the importance of an active lifestyle.  Gym strip is required while in PE classes.  If you are unable to take part in a PE class because of illness or injury, you must bring a note for each day you cannot participate.  If the illness/injury is over 3 days, students may be asked to bring a doctor’s note.

6.4 DAILY PE/EXPLORATORY BLOCK

All students have Physical Education and an exploratory block every day.

6.5 PARENT ADVISORY COMMITTEE

George Bonner Middle School has a Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) that meets once per month (first Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Library).  PAC represents the school community to ensure that the wishes of the community are represented in school decisions.  All parents with a child attending George Bonner Middle School are members of PAC.

6.6 SCHOOL PLANNING COUNCIL

School Planning Council (SPC) is made up of the principal, 1 teacher and 3 parents.  The mandate of the SPC is to develop goals for school improvement especially in the area of student achievement. School Planning Council developed the following goals to focus on during this school year.
