Principal's Message

Chemainus Elementary School is located in an area of the Cowichan Valley, rich in history and known world wide for its murals. It was the vision, courage and determination of a small group of people who revitalized the community through the creation of murals depicting the town’s history.

Education in the Chemainus area has similarly moved forward over the years and today we are in a beautiful new school situated on a ten-acre site which offers a great variety of play opportunities for children.

We have a hardworking and professional staff who accept the challenge of education seriously. The staff extends a warm welcome to all students, especially those who are new to our school.

Chemainus Elementary School is the home of Eagle Wings Pre School where children aged 3 and 4 attend for part day programs. This program offers a safe, caring environment for children in preparation for their entry into kindergarten and the start of their formal schooling. Children continue at Chemainus until grade 7 when they move on to Chemainus Secondary. This structure is unique in our School District and it meets the needs of families in our community.

Over the years Chemainus Elementary school has offered opportunities for members of the community to use the school facility rather than travelling to Duncan or Ladysmith. Badminton, basketball, Healthy Beginnings for new mothers, Rainbows and rug hooking are some of the programs that take place. Local artists in the community are invited to take part in our Artists in the Classroom program, bringing their talents to the children.

Chemainus Elementary offers a wide variety of extra curricular programs including an intra mural program, inter school sports, field trips and camping trips for the intermediate grades. These are offered in partnership with parents who provide outstanding support for the school. Breakfast with Santa and our Spring Carnival are events that attract the whole community.

Besides fund raising events, that have contributed to our classroom and school programs, parents are actively involved in the school. They are partners in learning and actively support our educational programs.

Through the high level of commitment of staff to serving the needs of students, the support of an active parent group, the children at Chemainus Elementary grow up knowing their community is a place of pride.

About Chemainus Elementary School

September 4th, 2001, saw the opening of the new Chemainus Elementary School on Gamer Street, the former site of North Chemainus Primary. For the past 63 years Chemainus Elementary was located on Severne Street which was the main building. Annex schools grew up at Crozier Road and North Chemainus Primary during the period before eventually being replaced.

In recent years, there has been a gradual increase in the student population and as the new school opened, slightly over 300 students were in attendance. The opening of a pre-school for 3 and 4 year old children and an after school care program provided by the Boys and Girls Club were further developments for the community.

In September 2002, we welcomed students from Brenton School which closed due to budgetary restraints. The student population increased to over 400, making it one of the largest schools in the District.

Students from the Chemainus area come from a variety of socioeconomic backgrounds. About 18 percent of the school's population claims First Nation status. The three local First Nations communities are Halalt, Penelakut and Chemainus.

Chemainus Elementary School has a full size gym, a soccer field, an outside sports court and adventure playgrounds for primary and intermediate students.
As there is no community centre in Chemainus, families have tended to look to the school for some community support and programming.
