Accelerated Reader

The Accelerated Reader Program is designed to encourage children to read by providing incentives in the form of points that can be redeemed for prizes.  As well, the program can be used to help improve children's reading and comprehension skills by monitoring levels of reading performance.

How it works:

1. Select a book. Students make their own choice from a wide selection of titles on the Reading Practise quiz lists (over 1500 titles). Books in the Chemainus Elementary Library collection are tagged with a blue AR sticker and a label giving the title, book level, and number of points the book is worth.  In our library, AR tests are ordered for books which have been specifically chosen for our library, rather than titles being ordered because there is an AR test available.  In addition to titles available in the school library, participating books may be used from home or public libraries.

2. Read the book. Students then read their books at their own pace.

3. Take the quiz. The student takes a multiple-choice comprehension test on the book's content. Tests may have 5, 10, or 20 items, depending on the length of the book, the number of words it contains, and the reading difficulty of the book. Points are assigned to the book, from 0.5 points on the beginner books on up to 19 points for the longer, more difficult books. The computer scores the test, awards the student points based on the results, and keeps a complete record.
