Principal's
Message
Koksilah is a special school rich with tradition,
and I am honoured to
be the principal. When asked to describe the school three
things come to mind: One, Koksilah is a multicultural school.
Two, Koksilah is a very respectful school. And three, Koksilah
is a caring school.
Koksilah
is multicultural by it very nature. There are both First
nations and non-first nations students
attending, with
the majority being First Nations. The teaching of culture
is a large component of the curriculum, with an emphasis
on valuing diversity. Koksilah is a respectful school.
Our code of conduct and general expectations for staff,
students
and
parents all
revolve around the three R’s. Be respectful to others.
Be respectful of property, both yours and others. Be respectful
of yourself. This concept comes up frequently in our daily
teachings.
Koksilah is a caring school.
We care about our students and they want to be here. This
is a safe for
them to come and
learn. The staff is very thoughtful and caring and is
dedicated to meeting the various needs of the students.
They are
to be commended for their continuous efforts. The parents
are
also caring of the students and together we try to work
as team in supporting their growth.
The school has a strong
focus on academics with the hope that Koksilah students
will continue to go on to do well at the middle
school and high school levels. Literacy is the main focus area,
with many programs aimed at improving our students’ literacy
levels.

There are programs such as: Early Success – which focuses
on early intervention screening and support; Communicating
for Success – which focuses on developing oral language,
and English as a second language; Reading Intervention – which
focuses on enhancing reading skills; Guided reading – which
focuses on teaching reading skills to small groups of children
at their level; and Balanced Reading – which focuses
on teaching all the components of a good readingand writing
program in a well thought out balanced
fashion.
The school also has a strong environmental
focus. The school has
reached the highest level in SEEDS, a
non-profit organization that promotes an awareness of our
global environment. We received the award for completing
1000 environmental
projects. We are one of 12 schools in the province to receive
the ‘Earth banner’. Another initiative the school
is involved in is a stream restoration. In 2002, the K – 6
grade children, parents, Department of Fisheries, Cowichan
Tribes, community land-owners, and teachers began a long
project of studying and restoring the stream to make it welcoming
to Coho salmon again. The students take a lot of pride in
helping
improve the environment both globally as well as right in
our back yard.
There is an open door policy at Koksilah
so if you would like to visit simply stop by the school,
check in at the office, have a look around, and see for
yourself what a great school it is.
Koksilah Elementary.
A caring, respectful school.
It is the place to be.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Sheryl Koers
Principal
