Maple Bay Elementary

Code of

Respectful Behaviour

The school is a community where people learn and grow together.  At Maple Bay School we encourage behaviours that foster positive peer relationships in the classroom and on the playground.

It is our intent to encourage a safe, caring and orderly learning environment for all children.  In order to establish this atmosphere, everyone must show respect for others, themselves, property and learning.  Our aim is to make this a positive learning experience.

IT IS THE RIGHT OF EACH STUDENT TO OBTAIN A QUALITY EDUCATION IN A POSITIVE, CARING ENVIRONMENT.

AT MAPLE BAY SCHOOL:

·      Students will respect themselves, other people, learning and the school environment.  This will be taught and reinforced through a variety of positive classroom and school-wide programs (ie. Student Leadership, Second Step, Merit Point Program, School Spirit Days, etc.).  In addition, respectful behaviour, positive attitude and other accomplishments will be recognized and celebrated at school assemblies.

·      Students will develop positive attitudes and respectful behaviours (ie. cheerful, friendly, co-operative, helpful and fair toward all).

·      Students will help others by saying “no” to bullying and inform an adult.

·      Students will accept responsibility for their work and behaviour and will be taught to develop and maintain the best possible standards in both areas.

SCHOOL RULES:

·

·        Students will act in a respectful and responsible manner.

INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVIOURS:

Inappropriate or unacceptable conduct includes behaviours that:

·         Interfere with the learning of others

·         Interfere with a respectful, orderly environment

·         Create unsafe conditions

·         Bully, harass, intimidate

We maintain a "Hands Off" policy at Maple Bay School (ie.no inappropriate or aggressive physical contact, play fighting or tackle games).  Teasing, name-calling and ‘put downs’ are also examples of unacceptable conduct. Students are encouraged to say “no” to inappropriate behaviour or bullying and to inform an adult.

CONSEQUENCES FOR INAPPROPRIATE BEHAVOUR:

As students become older and more mature, we would expect them to demonstrate increasing responsibility and self-discipline.  Depending on the severity and frequency of the problem, this may lead to increased consequences for inappropriate behaviour.  All staff responds to reports of a problem, either by dealing with it themselves or by referring the incident to the classroom teacher or the principal.  Use of quiet reminders, positive choices, time-outs and 1-2-3 strategies are commonly used in classrooms.  Physical aggression, fighting, willful disobedience, or repeated bullying will automatically include a referral to the principal and a call to parents.  Any concern discussed with students are done with a focus on problem solving in peaceful ways.  A record is kept of these discussions.  If the behaviour is of a significant nature or occurs on an ongoing basis, parents are advised or an incident report is sent home for the parent’s signature.  Other parties are informed when necessary and as per school district policy.

Possible Follow-Up For Students Who Do Not Comply With School Rules and Expectations:

1.      Direct action by teacher or principal

2.      Problem solving meeting with the principal (incident report completed)

3.      Loss of recess or lunch time with peers

4.      Phone call, letter or meeting with parents

5.      Referral to school counselor

6.      Student going home for lunch or restricted to certain area of playground

7.      Student going home at time of incident or the following day instead (suspension)

We are confident these procedures will make our school a safe environment for your children and we thank you for your anticipated support.  If you have any questions or suggestions regarding this “Code of Respectful Behaviours”, please feel free to call.

Keeping Parents Informed:

1.      Newsletters are sent out monthly, the first Friday of the month

2.      “Meet the Teacher” night and a “Family BBQ” in September provides an opportunity for families to connect with staff and other families and gather more information about the school

3.      Reporting on Student’s Progress:  there are three formal reporting periods per year
