Student Attendance
The staff of Palsson Elementary School believe that student
progress and regular school attendance are related. Therefore,
we encourage consistent, punctual attendance.
If parents are aware that their child's absence will be longer
than three days, please contact the classroom teacher and homework
will be assigned. In the event of a trip planned during school
hours, teachers would appreciate several days advanced notice
to prepare appropriate homework.
Behaviour Guidelines for Palsson Students
Palsson Staff wants to maintain a friendly and caring school
community, therefore students are expected:
· to speak with a quiet voice in the classrooms and
halls.
· to use polite, acceptable language.
· to wear inside shoes.
· to keep coat areas orderly.
In addition, for reasons of safety, Palsson students are required:
· to walk in the classrooms and halls. If students
are caught running, they will stand against the wall for 5-10
minutes. Active games may be safely played outside and during
P.E. classes.
· to play safely and non-violently. Fighting, rough-housing,
and play fighting are not permitted on school property.
· to play quiet, non-active games in the classrooms. The
hallways and washrooms are unsafe places to play.
· to stay within school boundaries during school hours.
The boundary is the fence which surrounds our school, and the
tree line next to the playground.
· to safely play throwing games outside. Objects may not
be thrown inside. Rocks may not be thrown. Snowballing is not
permitted on school grounds.
At Palsson Elementary School students are expected to assume
responsibility for their actions and behaviour. The above guidelines
clearly outline expectations which will create a safe, healthy,
and harmonious school community. See the inside back cover for
the School Discipline Plan.
Safety
The safety of all students in the school is our primary concern.
It is our job to see that student safety is ensured by individuals
following these rules:
Using Playground Equipment
Playground equipment is used for the purpose it was intended
(e.g. there is no standing on the swings).
If students are playing unsafely on the equipment they will take
a 5-10 minute time-out by standing against the wall of the school.
If the behaviour persists, the student is suspended from playing
on the equipment for one week.
Playing Safely
There is no violent behaviour in the school or on the school
grounds. Violent behaviour is fighting, pushing, tripping, hitting,
rough-housing, wrestling, rock or stick throwing.
If students are engaged in violent behaviour, they will be sent
to the office and an incident report will be completed. If the
problem persists, or in extreme cases, a letter will be sent
home, and a suspension may result.
Healthy Habits
Healthy habits ensure that our students are able to learn
and move about in a school environment that is clean and orderly.
Therefore, all students are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness
of our classrooms and school grounds. In addition, each class
will be responsible for their cloakroom area.
Eating Properly
There is no eating of sunflower seeds, dry noodles, or chewing
gum. All students eat snacks and lunches sitting at their desks.
Harmonious Environment
Palsson staff are very interested in seeing that a positive
tone is established and maintained in the school. An environment
of mutual respect enables students and staff to interact in a
harmonious manner.
Assembly Behaviour
During assemblies students behave in the following manner:
- sit quietly and still
- sit on bottoms
- clap appropriately
- be attentive to assembly leader.
Respectful Behaviour
Students treat others with respect. This includes:
- being polite
- no put-downs
- no swearing
- speaking with a quiet voice in the school
The teacher or noon-hour supervisor will evaluate and judge
the situation. In verified instances of swearing, the student
is given an immediate detention. The behaviour is recorded. An
incident report is completed by the student and sent home for
the parent's signature.
