Principal's
Message
A.B. Greenwell School is a very friendly, welcoming school.
It is small enough to keep the family feeling intact and
yet large enough to offer such resources as a computer
lab.
Many of the student’s parents also
attended elementary school here. It is fun talking with them
about the things
that have changed and those that are the same. We have a
very hard working group of parents who help our students
have a successful and happy time at A. B. Greenwell. The
staff is committed to providing the best possible learning
experiences for the students.
At A.B. Greenwell we take pride in:
-
Caring for ourselves and others
-
Creating a safe learning place for everyone
-
Respecting all people and property
-
Working out all our problems together
-
Being responsible for what we say and do
I feel very fortunate to be a member of
the A.B. Greenwell community.

About
AB Greenwell Elementary
A.B. Greenwell School became the first “open area” school on
Vancouver Island when it opened in 1969. The school is named after Mr. Archie
B. Greenwell, a long time resident and community supporter of Lake Cowichan.
The school no longer follows the open
area philosophy but a few remnants are left from that time.
The library and computer lab is in the middle of six classrooms.
The classrooms now have walls between each other but only
partial walls separating them from the central research
area. There is an administrative wing that also houses
a music room, kindergarten room and gym.
We have an
ideal location on the edge of the town of Lake Cowichan.
We are surrounded by bush.
We have gorgeous views of the mountains of the Cowichan
Valley.
As we are so close to the wilderness,
we have learned to respect the local wild life. We often
see bears in the fall, sometimes deer, and occasionally
cougars very near our grounds. Our school enrolls about
165 students from Kindergarten to Grade 5. This seems to
be an ideal age range for an elementary school.
