BAND Band 6 Students in Band 6 will have the opportunity to play a woodwind, brass or percussion instrument (no guitars) in a group band setting twice a week for 40 minutes. Students start with the basics of reading music and playing a band instrument and quickly progress to more advanced music and a variety of musical styles. Students in Band 6 gain an appreciation of music through listening and playing their instrument in a group situation. Students will be required to rent, purchase or borrow a band instrument for the entire year. A band method book will also be required at a reasonable cost. Home practicing is required and encouraged. Students will be provided with a music folder and sheet music as required.
Band 7 In Band 7, students will gain further musical skills and music appreciation as they progress to more advanced music and musical styles on their instrument. Students in Band 7 have several performance opportunities at local elementary schools as well as further trips and concerts throughout the year. Extra practices may be required outside the regular school timetable (1 early morning every other week). New students to band are always welcome. Students in Band 7 will also be encouraged to join the extra-curricular Jazz Band. Band 8 Students in Band 8 play and perform more advanced music in a variety of musical styles such as pop, blues, jazz, and rock as well as music from film and Broadway. Students will have many opportunities for school and public performance. Students in Band 8 regularly perform at the Cowichan Music Festival as well as several venues on the annual spring Grade 8 band trip (3 days and 2 nights) in the Vancouver area. Extra practices may be required outside the regular school timetable (1 early morning every other week). New students to band are always welcome. Students in Band 8 will also be encouraged to join the extra-curricular Jazz Band.
